The names of the 2019 Duchess Candidates were released on Friday.

A special tribute took place Friday evening during halftime of the Clearwater vs WHS football game.
The WHS Debate Team hit the road today for the first time. Only the novices competed at El Dorado - Lizzie Harriger and Philip Starnes went 2-2, Aurora Young and Karolina Gadzik went 3-1, and Quinn Mccue and Riley Anderson earned second place with a win-loss record of 4-0! This was the first time debating EVER for this group of novices!!
Several WHS 9th thru 12th graders have completed a shed in their, "Intro to Industrial Education, Carpentry, and Woodworking Principles" class, instructed by Mr. Ryan Elder out at WHS!
Postponed from Friday, due to rain, the 2019 WHS Volleyball Car Wash Fundraiser was moved to "Labor Day" from 1pm to 5pm. The location remained the same, behind BIG CHEESE PIZZA in downtown Wellington. Nice, steady crowd early on, great day for the event and a great week ahead to enjoy your clean cars and sunny skies!! The "team" appreciates the support they received greatly!

The 46th annual Shrine Bowl took place Saturday evening in Dodge City. Wellington's DeAndre Washington was a member of the "WEST" squad, the 1st Wellington Crusader to be selected for the Shrine Bowl since Tim Lira in 2003.DeAndre and his teammates had to be all smiles at the end of 4, pulling out a 26-7 victory over the East squad, in front of a large crowd at Dodge's Memorial Stadium. Congratulations to DeAndre - it sounds like the overall experience for all the participants will be in their memories for a lifetime!
Mrs. Sanders English 11 Class at WHS completed their ending project for "OCTOBER SKY", launching rockets they had built as part of a project similar to the true story of Homer Hickam, Jr. and his friend, known as The Rocket Boys, building rockets to reach their goal of one day working for NASA.
Don't have to tell most of you who this great couple pictured is! Coach Wallace and his wife Brenda were at WHS Wednesday. While there, Coach was presented a plaque commemorating his 50+ years of coaching in the Wellington School District. 50+ YEARS! Amazing gentleman, coach, husband, father, and loved by all!
WHS Class Night is a time to pay tribute and honor the many achievements of the present graduating class at Wellington High School. The list of achievements is long for this group of graduates, a class that has excelled in areas all up and down the spectrum - a classy bunch!
It was the annual SERVICE DAY today at WHS - all of the students either worked around the school or at various locations throughout the city - cleaning, organizing, sorting, painting, etc. etc...
Locations were all around, including Memorial Auditorium, Woods Park, Hibbs-Hooten Stadium, Wellington Health & Rehab, Thrift Shop, Golf Course, Arrowhead Animal Clinic, Sumner Community Hospital, Wheat Capital Manor and other locations as well.

The 9th Annual CTE (Career & Technical Education) Showcase was on slate Wednesday evening at WHS - impressions? impressive!!
The Kansas Business Hall of Fame held an Essay Contest recently, receiving 92 entries from 10 Kansas high schools, almost double from last year's entries. A representative from KBHF paid a surprise visit Wednesday to Mrs. Elizabeth Vaughn's class where Freshman Jael Catlett was presented with a certificate for being 1 of the top 3 winners in the State! Jael, along with Jordin MacKenzie, a freshman at Blue Valley North, and Melvin Le, a sophomore from Liberal, took the top spots in the contest!
The NOON LIONS CLUB held their annual JR LIONS AWARD ceremony at WHS on Tuesday - 12 exceptional "JUNIORS", 6 boys and 6 girls were selected for this honor, an honor based on good character, citizenship, and community. Congratulations to the following WHS Class of 2020 awardees!

A nice gathering of folks and fun Friday evening at Wellington High School. It was opening night for the Rodgers and Hammerstein production - "OKLAHOMA" and the Crusaders of the Stage were at their best, their very, very best!
Many WHS students gave the WHS Band and WHS Choir a big send-off Thursday in the Commons as the two musical groups boarded buses for State Competition. Both performed a number before their departure.
There was great news to report later Thursday from State Competition. Mr. David Brody, interim band director, indicated that both the band and the choir had received 1 ratings at State - "it's been years since both have received 1's."
The Regional Music Festival was held at Goddard this past weekend. Mr. David Brody, interim band director reports very good news from the event!
Several students qualified for the State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival coming up!

SEPTEMBER 2018 CTE Student of the Month
Winning first recently at the Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference in Wichita (and consequently, a trip to Nationals in Anaheim, CA in early May), the KWHS NEWS TEAM stepped up again on Wednesday.
The musical OKLAHOMA is coming to WHS soon!
The Rodgers & Hammerstein production is on slate for Friday, Saturday & Sunday, April 12, 13 & 14!
On Friday and Saturday, the curtain goes up at 7PM in the WHS Auditorium, 2PM @ the Sunday matinee. (Doors open 30 minutes before the show)

On Thursday, February 28, the National Honor Society Crusader Chapter at Wellington High School will be hosting a blood drive through American Red Cross. This event will take place from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the auxiliary gym. The blood collected will go towards those in need in the Sumner County area.

The Wellington FFA Chapter will be holding it's annual Spaghetti Feed and Live Auction on Monday, February 18! Dinner will begin at 5:30pm, with a silent auction going on till 6:16pm and then the live auction at 6:30pm. It will be held at the High school in the commons and auditorium.
Congratulations to the new 4A State Scholars Bowl Champion, Topeka Hayden! Coming in 2nd place today at WHS in the State 4A Tournament was Shawnee Mission-Bishop Miege. 3rd Place honors went to Garnett-Anderson Co. and 4th place to Towanda-Circle. Other 4A State Qualifiers included Winfield, Augusta, Abilene, and Tonganoxie.
Wellington High School (Scholars Bowl Coach Sarah House and the WHS Scholars Bowl Team) will be hosting the STATE 4A SCHOLARS BOWL TOURNAMENT on Saturday, Feb. 9th. The tournament action at Wellington will be just 1 of 6 STATE TOURNEY sites on Saturday. Teams competing at each location are listed below.

The WHS Forensics squad has had an eventful week. They competed in Medicine Lodge on Monday, where Gabe Hyer took 2nd in Original Oration, earning him a spot at State in May.

During the halftime of the Girls Varsity Game Friday,another exciting event, Senior DeAndre Washington received his official invitation to this coming June’s SHRINE BOWL in Dodge City. Many SHRINERS were on hand (no go-carts thankfully) and made the invitational presentation to DeAndre with his family and fans looking on! Congrats DeAndre – that is a great honor, it’s been 15 years since the IRONDUKES last had a participant in the SHRINE BOWL. Way to represent young man!
The DUKE DANCE was the final chapter to a week of royal fun for students at WHS and other schools across the district. On Friday, Dakota Lynnes was crowned the 2018-2019 WHS DUKE. Congratulations to DAKOTA LYNNES, the new DUKE who now reigns over his Crusader-dom...Other candidates included Devin Dickinson, Chase Pfalzgraf, Nic Reyes, and DeAndre Washington! Congratulations to all of them as well. Their escorts for the many ROYAL occasions this past week have been Jacelyn Buck, Skylar Troutman, Taylor Meyer, Juliette Hyer, and Arielle Pottier.
Coach Ross Foley at WHS, the Powerlifting Coach, wanted to remind all the workers slated for the Feb. 2nd Powerlifting Meet here at WHS, there will be a "worker information" meeting on January 31st at 6PM in the WHS Weightroom! See ya there!

The WHS Varsity Debate team were given a BIG SEND OFF at WHS - the "Debaters" are State-Tournament Bound!! Devin Dickinson, Gabe Hyer, Austin Fink and Austin Harriger had all qualified earlier in the season at tournaments at Chaparral and Augusta.
Last month, the WHS Varsity Debate won first place at the 4-Speaker Debate Regionals in Parsons! In fact, the Crusaders earned a clean sweep victory with a 12-0 score!
Tuesday, WHS students in the Ag Leadership class took advantage of the good weather to finally install the new Agriculture Education School Farm sign across the street from the Agriculture Building on the Farm Property.
The Ag Fabrication, and Advanced Ag Welding classes built the sign and students in the Ag Leadership class painted the sign last fall.
The WHS POWERLIFTERS need your assistance! On Feb. 2nd, the WHS Powerlifting Team (over 40 Crusaders/Lady Crusaders are participating), will be hosting a multi-team Powerlifting Meet at WHS. The action gets underway at 9:00AM.
The WHS Scholar's Bowl Team - participated in an 18 team tournament Monday @ Chaparral HS and did better than 17 of the other teams! (i.e. GOT FIRST PLACE!!!) Awesome bunch...!!

The WHS CHOIR under the direction of Jessica Coldwell are working hard to raise $$ for their NEW YORK trip in February! They are getting CLO$E! They truly have worked hard!!!!

Students in Mrs. Defore's World History class completed their first big project of the year, "Conquest and Its' Impact".
The WHS Debate team, coached by Caitlin Hendrix, traveled to Chaparral on Saturday to compete in a varsity tournament with positive results!
Austin Harriger and Austin Fink qualified for state by earning a first-place ranking with a win-loss rating of 5-0! It is their first clean sweep! Alivia Holgate and Lucas Lyne earned a 7th place ranking with a win-loss rating of 2-3. Aidan Young and Nicole Holdaway earned a 1-4 rating, winning in their last round.
Mrs. Melissa Buchanan's "Youth Entrepreneurship Class" had their Market Day this week at WHS. After a lot of planning, the group went shopping on Monday and then on Wednesday, their pop-up businesses were setup and in action Wednesday during all "3" lunch periods. The "Crusaders of the Stage", under the direction of new drama directors Bob and Michelle Brown, opened Thursday evening at WHS. Well performed and received by those present. Originally scheduled for Friday evening also, that performance was cancelled and moved to Saturday due to Sectional Football action Friday at Sellers Park. The finale's will be performed on Saturday, a matinee at 2PM, and the last performance, 7PM. There's a large cast of characters:

The WHS scholars bowl team was 1 of 30 teams who competed in the pre-season Entertainment tournament Thursday at Wichita West HS. All questions asked revolved around Entertainment. When all questions had been asked and answered, WHS walked away with 2nd place! The Wellington "Potluck" Community Dinner took place Monday evening at the Knights of Columbus Hall in downtown Wellington. Table hosts (volunteers from the community) provided side dishes, drinks and tableware...Mrs. Karla Lawless from WHS and her FAC students provided the meat, tables and chairs. The meal was FREE for those that stopped in. The event ran from 5:45pm until around 7:00pm.

The first PEP RALLY of the school year was held today at WHS! The Cheerleaders, the Band, and the new Crimson Dancers performed for the raucous crowd! All of the Fall Coaches introduced their teams to the student body and public guests. And then, in climactic suspense, the 2018-2019 DUCHESS CANDIDATES were announced!

WPD and student helpers handed out "prize tickets" this morning at WHS to students as they entered the parking lots. If you were wearing your seat belt, you were handed the "ticket" and then the ticket could be redeemed as you entered the building for a new "SEAT-BELT AWARENESS T-SHIRT", compliments of Professional Body Works here in Wellington!!
