Mrs. Sanders English 11 Class at WHS completed their ending project for "OCTOBER SKY", launching rockets they had built as part of a project similar to the true story of Homer Hickam, Jr. and his friend, known as The Rocket Boys, building rockets to reach their goal of one day working for NASA.

They grew up in the coal mining town of Coalwood, WV where it was expected to go to work in the coal mines once graduated from high school, but each of the boys had different goals: to get out of Coalwood on science scholarships. The book follows their journey through high school and their trial and errors with rocket building. They succeed senior year, win the National Science Fair, are offered scholarships, and left Coalwood forever. Homer Hickam Jr. even worked for NASA.

The students shot the rockets off this past Friday. It was the final project of the school year. Students look forward to the project all year and enjoy the process and the eventual launch!
