The Kansas State Department of Education Commissioner, Randy Watson, accompanied by District #10 State BOE member Jim McNiece who also is presently serving as Chairman of the State Board of Education, visited Wellington and the Wellington School District on Friday. At WHS, Mr. Watson and Mr. McNiece ate lunch with students, exchanging ideas, answering questions, etc. Following that luncheon, the USD 353 School District principals, school board members, other administrators as well as the Mayor of Wellington, Shelley Hansel engaged in discussion with the two top KSDE officials, in general the district sharing what it's needs are and will be and Mr. Watson and Mr. McNiece sharing their vision and direction they see public education going in the future in Kansas. One example they shared is to individualize and tailor the student's secondary education more to each respective student's desired educational and/or vocational goals and to provide more flexibility (with accountability) to the local school districts to integrate those types of adjustments. The staff and students alike appreciated their visits with these two top KSDE officials. Wellington certainly thanks Mr. Watson and Mr. McNiece for spending time in the district.
